Do you think a burglar could be fooled by a beagle or a bassett?

I’ve read in books that beagles make bad guard dogs because they’re friendly toward strangers. BUT I also read that burglars might think that they’re a larger dog if they only hear their bark. Do you believe this?

Beagles have a call so unlike other dogs. And Bassetts sound deeper than a big dog in my opinion.

Possibly, yes. Many burglars won’t want to take the risk of entering a property with any dog; even a small dog can give a nasty bite.

I doubt many intruders, unless also Beagle or Basset lovers, would necessarily be able to distinguish them vocally, anyway. People who don’t know about Beagles wouldn’t always know they make poor guard dogs: I didn’t, until you said so.

The “Yo Yo Yo” trumpet of the beagle is a sound you don’t forget, so the burglar might know just what is behind the door. But the thing is–it’s still a deterrent! Even a Chihuahua! It’s the ruckus itself the sneak thief doesn’t want to draw attention to himself. So any size pooch is a plus for alerting the family or the neighbors and persuading the thief to find easier picken’s!

Well, even if the burglar thinks it is a small dog, just the fact that the dog is barking would alert anyone that might be in the house that someone is outside, and if the people become suspicious enough, they might call the cops, and no robber wants to deal with that. It is much easier to rob houses when everything is quiet inside so as not to attract the attention of the inhabitants or any neighbors.

yes if they were going by the bark and had a deep bark. also just a noisy barking could scare them off as they wouldn’t want the attention it attracts. a;so some times small dogs are more aggressive than big dogs.

Most burglars are somewhat deterred by any dog. Statistics show they prefer to rob homes without any dog. A barking dog is a good deterrent!

BTW, I love the new picture of Judge! It’s very cute.

I have had a number of people not want to enter my home due to the basset barking. They didn’t even realize it was coming from the little dog in front of them-LOL! She is only 40 lbs but sounds like a St. Bernard. She has got one BIG BARK.

My beagle can have a decent bark but if she starts her “Rooing” it gives it away.

The beagle would love for people to visit where the basset is very protective of our house/property. She doesn’t like anyone coming close.

Basset Hounds certainly sound like a very large dog.

However, even a Basset Hound will keep out all but the most determined burglars.

I remember one time when I was moving, I had everything packed and the first trip I made was to move the dogs. When I returned, the house had been broken into. Obviously the local thieves had been waiting for the dogs to be gone.
